Fundamental Illustration
Observational Illustration (week 1)
Task 1 & 2
Respond to Dave McKean talking about Paul Nash and his book The Black Dog, using visual note taking. And creating a documentary illustration based on my dad.
Focus (week 2)
Focussing on Interpretation, Text & Image, Problem Solving,Time Management, Visual Language, Deadlines, Articulation of ideas, Terminology, Identifying Materials, Exploring Techniques.
Themes discussed1. Exquisite corpses - looking a juxtaposition
2. Collage - juxtaposition 3. Sculpture/ installation 4. Text 5. Typology - a classification according to general type, especially in archaeology, psychology, or the social sciences. 6. Intermedia - to describe artwork that made use of structural continuities between the arts.\ 7. Concrete poetry - |
In session Brief: Post cards
My weaknesses: Viewing the task very literally, feeling trapped by the a5 'frame' of the postcard, not having a story in mind when creating a response therefore contributing to a lack of depth within my outcomes. My strengths: experimenting with collage, understanding that sometimes simple is better, exploring different aspects of the post card.
Week 3
This week we were in a work shop so we were cryptically handed our new brief in a sealed envelope.
Brief
Outcome
For this brief I wanted to continue my exploration of rendering physical techniques digitally, I have been inspired by Lino printing for this project. While spesifically being inspired by Pam Wishbows mini comic 'hunger'. Which is a non verbal comic and uses a limited colour palette, similarly to Lino printing.
week 4 - Top 40
Who is Ken Garland?
Ken Garland is famous for his first things first manifesto.
"Today, Garland is perhaps most associated with his political and ideological stance on graphic design."

Illustration Governing Bodies
Book binding
There are lots of different book binding techniques.
To name four: saddle stitch, wring binding, section binding and coptic binding

Week 5
Making a golf course
Within this session we worked as a group on a shared project of making a golf course from physical materials. I really enjoyed this project and it was a lot of fun working as a team and seeing how illustration can manifest in the physical world.
Consideration of personal project
Project guidance: choose something that can follow a narrative.
My Interests:
- Children's illustration
- moving image
- stop motion animation
- shadow puppetry as animation

Lotte Reiniger
Lotte Reigner created beautiful paper animations which were all hand cut and manually moved. My favourite of her animations is The Adventures of Prince Achmed which is an animation that uses only music and is otherwise silent.

Chinese shadow puppetry/ shadow play
Chinese shadow puppetry is a form of theatre acted by colourful silhouette figures made from leather or paper, accompanied by music and singing. Manipulated by puppeteers using rods, the figures create the illusion of moving images on a translucent cloth screen illuminated from behind.

Chinese Folklore - The Silkworm Goddess
I have been looking at the tale of the Silkworm Goddess, inspired by Si Ling-Chi who is credited with discovering silk-making itself, and also the weaving of silk thread into fabric. One legend claims that Xilingshi was in her garden when she picked some cocoons from a mulberry tree and accidentally dropped one into her hot tea. Inspiring a Chinese folktale known as 'The silkworm Goddess' or 'The Girl with the Horses Head'
Week 6 - Responding to music
In this weeks session our task was to listen to music and respond using mark making. We then took the images we had created and made a short animation using after effects.

|
Cd Cover - Final Outcome
To create this cd cover I used Lino with black ink. I used a small square of Lino and repeated the pattern multiple times, the effect created a path between each other. The piece of music I responded too had lots of intense sounds and ups and downs in the rhythm.
Week 7
Youtube resources - inspiration for final project.

Christian Boltanski
Christian Boltanski is a multi media artist who explores themes relating too the holocaust, mortality, and mourning. His work is so seemingly simple yet so powerful. I am greatly interested in his use of projection as a form of narrative illustration.
Victorian Moving Toys
Marcus found this book and gave it to me to have a look at as it explains a lot of processes to physically experiment with moving image which is in a similar stream as shadow puppetry so it could be interesting to explore and experiment with.
Week 8 - Experimenting
Shadow puppet process
I have begun to experiment with making simple puppets and lighting them using phone camera. I found that using multiple lights casts multiple shadows and that made for an interesting composition.
Week 9
Laser Cutter Test
This is the first attempt I have made using the laser cutter. I think it has turned out really well and will be a successful use of the technique for making other puppets. My next course of action is to plan out the key scenes and characters I will need so that I can put them on the same sheet to be laser cut out.
Week 10
Shadow Puppet Process
Laser cutting learning curves |
I have drawn the key shadow puppets that I will need for each scene within the narrative, which I planned out earlier using a post it note process. My aim is to move these outlines into illustrator so that they can be cut out using the laser cutter and then used to make puppets.
|
The laser cutter isn't the hard part, the hard part is getting all the lines right in illustrator. But I think I have finally figured it out, my problem was that I kept getting double lines when laser cutting and I just needed to delete the outer line as well as all the underneath layers that show up in illustrator.
The first attempt created the tiny little figure and the second figure had double lines so both things to learn from. |
