Brief 

​SHOOT FROM THE HIP
The aim of these last three weeks is to speed up, trust yourselves more and to remind yourselves that illustration is about making images in your own individual voice. 

We will provide you with a series of tasks from which you will select three - one per week. 

At the end of these three weeks the outcome should be final-art heavy and development light. 
The resulting collection of work should look like it has come from one individual. Don't reinvent the wheel with each task.

A more in-depth look at colour, composition and design of my beer cans. Trying to keep a consistent visual language so that my beer cans look like a set. 

Final Outcomes 

I’ve designed the front of the beer can as we only have a week for each project and I felt that this was the most important element of the can.

 Powerful picture books inspo 

Picture books are such a powerful way of communicating difficult subjects to children. Books I have been inspired by include: The colour monster, The bad seed, When sadness comes to call, Perfectly Norman, Me and my fear, Tough guys have feelings too. 

Researching songs 

Song choices include, ‘Garden song’ by phoebe bridges, ‘You are my sunshine’ cover by Johnny cash and ‘Green grass’ by Ellie Dixon 

Kick starter plan: based on a song 

To create a convincing kickstarted I will aim to produce, a front cover and one internal illustration. Book considerations should include, size, typography, included text.

Reimagine a cover of a bestselling book, a competition by The Penguin Cover Design Award competition. 

The choices:

Children’s Fiction: A murder most unladylike 

A Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens 

The first book in a murder mystery series, about two girls; Hazel and Daisy. They set up their own detective society called Wells & Wong.

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo

A portrayal of a group of interconnecting characters, mostly Black British women:

Amma: Theatre director, getting her big break at the National Theatre who is the connector among the 12 characters in various ways.
Yazz: Amma’s 19-year old daughter at University.
Dominique: good friend of Amma’s who follows lover Nzinga to live at Spirit Moon in the United States.
Carole: Business woman, gang-raped as a teen, who was a student in Shirley King’s high school class.
Bummi: Carole’s mother, immigrant from Nigeria and housecleaner for Penelope Halifax, and entrepreneur in the cleaning business
Latisha: good friend of Carole’s in high school, wild in high school, becomes a grocery store supervisor after working as a cashier post-high school, becomes the “new” LaTisha.
Shirley: Teacher at Peckham School for Boys and Girls, teaches both Carole and LaTisha, best friend to Amma from grammar school.
Winsome: Shirley’s mother. Has affair with Shirleys husband Lennox.
Penelope: Teacher at Peckham School, raised white by her adoptive parents, Hattie is her biological mother.
Megan/Morgan: identifies as gender-free, pronouns they/theirs, lectures in one of Yazz’s classes.
Hattie: 93-year old farmer and Morgan’s great grandmother, Penelope’s biological mother, Grace and Joseph’s daughter.
​Grace:  ​bi-racial daughter of Abyssinian Wolde and Daisy who died of TB, Hattie’s mother

'The Last Amazons of Dahomey'

The name of the play that the character Amma writes in the book, 'The Last Amazons of Dahomey' takes inspiration from real women in 1897 in the kingdom of Dahomey, in West Africa. These women were all trained to fight with swords and guns and were considered to be fearless warriors.

Brief 

To produce a series of illustrations based on four different characters to be used as part of an ‘exquisite corpse’ book that we will produce as a collaborative project. 

My characters 

Modesty Godsgift - Coffee house proprietor, 1650s enormous elaborate wigs, overuse of the beauty spot
Innsbruck Ormerod - Liar, claimed to have invented rice and the tarpaulin 
Sir Peregrine Chomondeley - Establishment figure and gambler, scared of losing his knighthood, 
Brick - Septuagenarian (70-79) roadie, has worked with all of the metal greats

Inspiration 

Looking at multiple different interpretations of the exquisite corpse technique will help inform my own choices when designing characters. 

Understanding character design (Kubo & The two strings and Up) 

I feel that understanding character design is an important element for this project as it will allow me to push my initial ideas for what my character might look like further. I have referenced ‘The art of’ books of ‘Kubo & The two strings’ and ‘Up’ both of which have strong character development and look carefully at what makes a character. I found it helpful to see that the initial character designs start off very rough and simplistic which the finer details added in the later stages. 

Things to consider 

Instagram post from @sarahmassini taking about the key stages of character development within children’s books. Although we’re not making a children’s book it is still helpful to think of character development within stages and the added elements that can make a character so interesting.
